Deutsch von Jeannette Böttcher. Heyne, München , S. I think this is my last Tom Clancy adventure. I've read all the older novels and enjoyed them tremendously.

It's just changing and I find myself losing interest and dredging through to the end. This will be the last Clancy book I read.

His writing has gotten sloppy, and his personal politics have taken over his story lines. I'd like to think he was a better writer than this back in his "Hunt for Red October" and "Cardinal of the Kremlin" days - and that my love for his writing wasn't purely a lack of maturity on my part.

Oooh, and some racism thrown in too. He really seems to hate the Chinese. And women. Clancy doesn't like women.

Like I said, last Clancy I'll ever read. Any likeability of the Jack Ryan character is immediately out the window just a few pages in to this book, as he starts spouting his fascist, racist, sexist views.

If the man hates being President so much, why does he quit? The Secret Service has better be on the lookout for him, as I wouldn't be surprised if his wife smothered him in his sleep.

This book would probably be a real page turner for a middle aged, white, gun loving, racist US male. Everyone else would probably be thoroughly insulted and offended by page three.

Had to keep reading though, just to see how ridiculous it got. So you know,, it ends with more Japanese sausage.

View 2 comments. At some point I'm going to revisit the early Clancy's in the hope that they are as suspenseful as I remember them.

This, however, I've read for the first and last time. This is easily the worst Clancy book I've read. The only way this gets two stars is that—like all Clancy books—it's a thrilling ride.

I could handle the political propaganda, because books aren't written in an ideological vacuum. And Clancy isn't writing in a real world, either.

It's a world where the president gets to unilaterally go to war whenever he wants and one where countries are clearly divided into good and evil.

It's an uncomplicated world that's fun for novels and completely irrelevan This is easily the worst Clancy book I've read.

It's an uncomplicated world that's fun for novels and completely irrelevant to reality. That makes Clancy's propagandizing a bit disappointing, though it doesn't completely undercut the value of the book.

Indeed, all that would be tolerable and would make for a fun piece of summer beach reading. This book, however, is crammed with unnecessary descriptions of sex all of which is done by promiscuous Asians—even the activities of the Russian prostitutes is only implied, not explicitly described , incredibly offensive racial slurs made by nearly all of the book's heroes , and a range of other unnecessary and derogatory language.

Perhaps Clancy was trying to give to give his characters moral depth. That's hard when your main character is the shining beacon of what is clearly Clancy's vision of an ideal American.

In that he fails. This book, bogged down with a slew of unnecessary racial animus, is enough to make me wonder whether I'll ever have the desire to pick up another Clancy book.

It seems that the author of Patriot Games and The Hunt for Red October is out of gas, and if that's the case, I've got better things to fill my time.

Abandoned this pages in. I use to read Clancy in high-school and I was curious to know what I thought of his writing many years later. Here is a sample regarding the Chinese, p Abandoned this pages in.

This book is going straight to the recycling bin. Here's another complaint about Tom Clancy books--yeah, still not sure why I end up reading them--it takes him pages to get to a plot.

For pages, he's meandering among too many potential plot lines, and really, it's a lot of work to keep track of them all. But hey, he still sells books, and I still keep reading them, so that's my fault.

This one--which is hopefully the last of this ridiculously long series--was WAY too heavy on the anti-abortion stance.

I think that we could have done away Here's another complaint about Tom Clancy books--yeah, still not sure why I end up reading them--it takes him pages to get to a plot.

I think that we could have done away with all of President Ryan's monologues on his very Catholic stance and Supreme Court Justice picks.

That had really nothing to do with any way the plot developed, and really, do we care what Tom Clancy's view on the subject are? This book was a bit of a mess.

I love the Jack Ryan character, and Tom Clancy knows how to build slow momentum towards a big climax.

However, much of this book was just boring, patently racist, and disturbing in its inability to pull the whole story together with a human dimension in the end.

The end is pretty good as an outline of plot. It's only because of the last fo This book was a bit of a mess. It's only because of the last four or five hundred pages that this book got two stars.

Definately not my favorite Tom Clancy novel. It took a while for the plot to unravel, and even then it was a little bit of a stretch.

Took too long to get the real battle, and once there it was over too quickly and too hokey. Clancy is usually rock-solid on this stuff, but missed the mark on this one.

Not horrible by any means - still finished it, at least - but definately a couple notches below what i would expect from Tom.

I didn't get very far in this book. I read just a couple chapters- enough to see that swearing was going to be commonplace.

I stopped reading because of that. If I want to hear the F-word, I can just come to school and not tell the kids to knock it off Too bad- the story was very promising.

I was excited for the exciting read. View all 6 comments. Clancy's newest Ryan opus is somewhat of a disappointment in comparison to his past stories.

For the record, I am a rabid Clancy fan and always grab his newest book on the first day. I have enjoyed every novel he has written, and still consider him to be my favorite author.

This time around however, I'm not satisfied with the novel as a whole. Maybe the quality of his past works has set the bar too high for me to enjoy any subsequent attempts.

In any case, here's my take on this book: 1 Roll Call: Clancy's newest Ryan opus is somewhat of a disappointment in comparison to his past stories.

In any case, here's my take on this book: 1 Roll Call: As usual, Clancy manages to weave a ton of characters into this story.

We see major and minor characters from every one of the earlier Ryan novels, which adds a fun and familiar tone to the book.

If you have read all of the Ryan novels, this book is like attending a family reunion. This book was no exception.

Unfortunately, as other reviewers have pointed out here, Clancy must not have had a clear ending in mind, as it was very abrupt and trite.

Now he is a whiny, preachy, foul-mouthed shadow of his former self. It seemed that every time Ryan appeared he had to: a complain about being the President that got old in the last book , b rant about the media, abortion, or the sexual habits of others Get off the soap box Tom , and c drop the What can Ryan do next?

Become the Pope? Besides typos, there were many instances were he would repeat a phrase, quote, colorful metaphor, or historical reference within the same page or several pages.

It was very awkward and annoying. There were many instances were he would repeat a phrase, quote, colorful metaphor, or historical reference within the same page I guess it's easy to do.

Conclusion: Nit-picking aside, Clancy is still the best at what he does. My dissection of the minutia found therein is merely the ramblings of a hypercritical fan, still fresh from reading the book.

Perhaps, with time and another reading, this book will join those before it in a more fond and forgiving remembrance.

Ok, that is it. I am done with Clancy and Jack Ryan. Despite the difficulty I had with major elements of Executive Orders, I found the story interesting enough to want to continue on the Journey with Jack Ok, that is it.

Despite the difficulty I had with major elements of Executive Orders, I found the story interesting enough to want to continue on the Journey with Jack.

I was somewhat confused because I have seen this listed as a John Clark novel however the cover desription suggested to me that this was clearly a Jack Ryan book following on from Debt of Honour and Executive Orders and that John Clark is only a supporting character.

This one takes an absolute age to get going and while it is, Clancy is throwing his most bonkers political opinions at us via a Jack Ryan who has become no more than a mouthpiece for his theories of how everything that is wrong with the US is the fault of the left, the media and the bureaucrats.

He actually postulates at one point that only a rich man is suitable to be in a Senior Government Position because they are already rich and therefore incorruptible!!!!!

There is plenty more where that came from. That and the strong streak of Catholicism and Racism which runs through this novel.

I mentioned that this was the culmination of a story Arc. The Chinese are the shadowy puppet masters behind the scenes pulling the strings of the other aggressors in the two previous Ryan books.

And while those plots have failed and the US remains on top, the Chinese have escaped unscathed so conflict between the US and the Chinese was always on the cards.

But here, far from being the puppet masters, the Chinese are more like the Marx Brothers. Characters make crazy leaps of logic and take uncharacteristic actions.

And what is worse is that Clancy has managed to turn his protagonist into an unlikeable character. There is not a section of the book where he isn't bemoaning why he is President — this from a man who actually chose to run for the Presidency this time.

What a letdown. A fairly ridiculous story that alternates racism, bad prognostication and great men's bathroom habits; this is where Tom Clancy leaves off in the Jack Ryan saga.

What do we learn from this book? That Tom Clancy guessed wrong about who the world's next threat would be betting on China , that this probably stems from a racist attitude towards Asians which started with his evil Japanese, continuing with his evil Chinese for the third time , and that great men take no action until What a letdown.

That Tom Clancy guessed wrong about who the world's next threat would be betting on China , that this probably stems from a racist attitude towards Asians which started with his evil Japanese, continuing with his evil Chinese for the third time , and that great men take no action until they pee as any action they take is the second thing they do after waking up.

Is it the same for great women? Not many of them in this book but one CIA field agent reminds himself that his female boss "takes her leaks sitting down.

How great is he? One of the "good Japs", being California-born, he walks into a top government official's office, seduces his secretary - not so difficult, apparently, as we learn that sex is nothing to them and they give blow-jobs for decent office furniture - and immediately develops her as a source into the top leadership.

No doubt she was tired of "limp noodles" and appreciated "getting it good" as only an American and top CIA field agent, let's not forget - may be part of their training, you never know Must be all that California sunshine and surfing that makes up for it and turns him into the stud he is!

Apparently, even if they're perpetually drunk on vodka, there are no "limp noodle" problems here!

All I can say is that Clancy really shows his age here with all his droning on about bladder problems and right-wing politics, and Jack Ryan is turned into a sort of a Rush Limbaugh action-figure, bent on "how things oughtta be.

Fictional conflict between Russia and the People's Republic of China. NATO agree's and Russia is allowed entry. Before the last chips fall, a rogue Chinese secretary of the politburo launches multiple nuclear missiles from a PLA 2nd Art.

The effect is one of the missiles being shot down by high-tech close range AA assets aboard an AH Apache longbow, and the second being knocked down over Washington DC at the last available moment by experimental Aegis system s aboard the guided missile cruiser the uss Gettysburg that is in port outside of DC.

They angrily storm the politburo and demand the communist party be ousted for their illegal actions in the war and the averted nuclear annihilation that would have followed had the nuke hit DC.

This book is for anyone who wants to read and has the time to take in a thousand page book. The book starts off with a Russian head of state being caught up in an attempted murder and narrowly escaping with his life.

The first few pages set the tone for the whole book. This book starts off explosive and continues to keep a fast pace and action throughout most of the book.

The plot is what I liked most about this book it is always thickening and moving never dying out or becoming dull.
