Essos is the largest of the four known continents in the world. It lies east of Westeros and north of Sothoryos and Ulthos , stretching from the Shivering Sea in the north to the Summer Sea in the south, and from the narrow sea in the west to the lands surrounding the Jade Sea in the east, if not farther.

Essos is populated by many different peoples and has a vast and varied geography. In the novels of A Song of Ice and Fire , the continent is simply called the eastern continent, beyond the narrow sea, or the east; George R.

Martin first referred to it as Essos in mid in an interview, [1] and later officially confirmed it. The Appendix of A Dance with Dragons officially refers to the continent east of the narrow sea as Essos.

Essos is considerably larger than Westeros , though its true extent is unknown as no map of the entire continent currently exists.

The north coast of the mainland is separated from the polar cap by the Shivering Sea. To the south, across the Summer Sea , lies the uncharted continent of Sothoryos.

South of the Shadow Lands is the continent of Ulthos. The geography and climate of Essos varies greatly.

Being separated from the polar cap of the Land of Always Winter and located farther to the south, it is affected by winters to a lesser extent then Westeros.

The western coastline appears to be temperate in the north, becoming drier and hotter to the south, and is characterized by green rolling hills, the massive Forest of Qohor , and extensive island chains such as Braavos and Lys.

The middle of the continent is covered by the flat grasslands plains of the Dothraki sea and, to the east, the arid wasteland of red sand known as the red waste , where nothing grows.

The south is dominated by dry rolling hills and has a Mediterranean climate with a coastline along the Summer Sea connecting Volantis with the Valyria peninsula and the great inlet known as Slaver's Bay.

Essos is dominated by the Bone Mountains and the Krazaaj Zasqa , longitudinal mountain ranges separating the western half more familiar to the Westerosi and an exotic eastern half of which less is known.

The Free Cities are nine independent city-states located on the western coast of Essos. Seven of the cities are coastal Braavos , Myr , Pentos and Volantis or island ports Lorath , Lys and Tyrosh , lying on the narrow sea, whilst two others Norvos and Qohor are located inland.

Except for Braavos, which was founded by refugee slaves, these cities are former colonies of the destroyed Valyrian Freehold ; as such they retain elements of its culture.

They are more developed and mercantile than the cities of Westeros, even King's Landing. Each of the Free Cities controls a certain amount of territory surrounding it, including smaller towns and villages.

The region of the Free Cities extends from the western coastline to the Forest of Qohor and the mighty River Rhoyne in the east, which separate them from the Dothraki sea and the Kingdom of Sarnor.

In the northwestern corner of this region, between Braavos and Pentos , are the hills of Andalos , the ancient homeland of the Andals and, according to legends, the source of the Faith of the Seven.

Essos is larger than Westeros, but given that its eastern coast has never been mapped working out the full size of the continent is impossible.

The mapped portion of Essos extends for approximately six thousand miles eastwards from the Narrow Sea, with the continent being three thousand miles across from north to south at its widest point between Asshai and the coast of Mussovy.

The continent is narrower in the west, with less than two thousand miles separating the north and southern coasts of the Free Cities region.

Given the lack of a central controlling government, estimating the population of the continent of Essos is impossible. However, it is known that most of the Free Cities and the cities of Slaver's Bay have populations in the hundreds of thousands, with Dothraki khalasars running into the tens of thousands Khal Drogo 's khalasar , noted as being unusually large, consisted of forty thousand riders and sixty thousand unmounted followers.

The population of Essos must thus be greater than Westeros's, which runs into the millions or tens of millions.

The Free Cities are ruled by a mixture of councils, elected individuals and hereditary rulers. The khalasars of the Dothraki are ruled by khals , warleaders who have earned their position through battle prowess and cunning.

The cities of Slaver's Bay and Qarth are ruled by the richest merchants. The Golden Empire of Yi Ti is, in-name only, ruled by a God-emperor, with hundreds of princes, priest-kings, warlords, and even tax collectors ruling various domains of the nation.

There are numerous military formations in Essos. Unlike Westeros and its levies, many of the Essosi powers prefer to retain standing armies, around which additional troops can be raised.

The Essosi also employ mercenary companies, freelance armies which fight for coin. The most famous such companies include the Golden Company and the Second Sons.

Despite their armed might, most of the Essosi powers live in fear of the Dothraki. The Dothraki are the most feared cavalry force in the world, able to field vast armies of tens of thousands of horsemen.

Though they lack heavy armor, they make up for it in maneuverability, numbers and discipline. The only military force in Essos that rivals the Dothraki in reputation is that of the Unsullied , warrior-eunuch slaves bred and trained in Astapor and notable for not being able to feel pain thanks to drugs.

Unsullied are notable as the only foreign force that the Dothraki respect, after the Unsullied defeated them in battle at Qohor several centuries ago.

Essos is a hodgepodge of numerous, sometimes competing religious beliefs. Braavos hosts a number of temples to numerous different gods and permits the worship of all.

Braavos is the only place outside of Westeros to host a sept for the worship of the Faith of the Seven. The Free City of Lys worships a native love goddess, whilst the citizens of Qohor worship a god called the Black Goat.

The Drunken God and Trios are deities known in Tyrosh. A lunar deity is also worshipped by the Moonsingers , who are the most popular religion in Braavos as they led the founding of the city eight centuries ago.

R'hllor , the Lord of Light, is a popular deity across Essos. The religion has temples in Lys, Braavos and Volantis, is known in Slaver's Bay and also has a center of worship in distant Asshai.

The Lhazareen worship the Great Shepherd , whilst the Dothraki worship the Great Stallion , a deity that respects strength and stamina.

The Ghiscari follow a religion based around the Temples of the Graces , which are located in each of their major cities including Meereen and Astapor.

Each temple is led by a Green Grace. This religion seems to be largely made up of priestesses, with few or no priests.

Qarth is notable for not having any major temples or native religion. This may be due to the Undying , an order of warlocks , instead providing many of the services that a religion might.

Essos is home to numerous ethnic groups and races although, unlike Westeros, no non-human races that are known of.

The Free Cities are dominated by people of Valyrian descent, though some surviving Andal and Rhoynar blood is likely. The Dothraki are the dominant group of the central part of the continent, but there has been cross-pollination between them and other peoples they have conquered.

The cities of Slaver's Bay and Ghiscar to the south are Ghiscari in blood and origin. Beyond the Bone Mountains lie more rarely-encountered peoples, such as the Jogos Nhai, Asshai'i and the people of the Shadow, who go masked amongst outsiders.

For a more detailed history of Essos, see the timeline of history. Twelve thousand years ago, Essos and Westeros were linked by a land bridge, the Arm of Dorne.

When the First Men crossed the Arm and invaded Westeros with weapons of bronze, they were opposed by the Children of the Forest. When they could not stem the invasion, the Children destroyed the Arm with sorcery, creating the Stepstones.

Although this war was fought predominantly in Westeros, it became part of Essosi legend when a great hero, Azor Ahai , helped defeat the Others using a sword called Lightbringer.

This act became instrumental in the myths of the faith of the Lord of Light. According to tradition, more than six thousand years ago the Seven appeared to a warlord of north-western Essos called Hugor of the Hill.

They inspired him to conquer the surrounding region and forge the realm of Andalos. Some centuries later, the Andals chose to cross the Narrow Sea and invade Westeros, landing along the coast of the Vale of Arryn.

They overran Westeros over a period of centuries, eventually coming to dominate most of the southern half of the continent. In any case, the Stepstones are also heavily contested but rarely controlled by one party for long, and they are infamous as pirate dens.

Nonetheless nearby Tyrosh is more often than not in control of those islands closest to itself. While Myr is located on the mainlands on the eastern shore of the Bay of Myrth to the north of the Disputed Lands, Lys is actually located on a chain of islands off the southern short of the peninsula.

As one proceeds west-to-east from Braavos, along the shores of the Shivering Sea, the Hills of Andalos are separated by the Upper Rhoyne and Lorath Bay from the sprawling Hills of Norvos, which cover a large area.

The Free City of Lorath is located on an island in this bay. The city of Norvos is located within these hills and along the River Noyne which flows south into the Rhoyne, and thus does not have a large port on the Shivering Sea.

East of Norvos is a peninsula on the north coast known as The Axe , which contains several important mines operated by Norvos.

Located at the eastern edge of the Rhoyne's watershed, Qohor is located closest to the Dothraki Sea and is under frequent threat by Dothraki raiders.

South of the forest the trees give way to some brief plains which allow the Dothraki clear access to the banks of the Rhoyne itself.

A map showing the location of Valyria on the continent of Essos: note that it is southeast of the River Rhoyne and the Free Cities.

The ancient empire known as the Valyrian Freehold was founded on a peninsula of land located south-east of the current location of the Free Cities, which were founded as colonies from Valyria.

The basis of the Valyrians' power were the mighty dragons which they found in a chain of volcanoes on their peninsula, then tamed to ride as weapons of war.

Travelers between these two regions have to sail around the peninsula. Some years ago, an event known as the "Doom of Valyria" possibly a civil war involving massive use of magical powers shattered the Valyrian empire, and the Valyrian peninsula itself was broken into a chain of islands.

Known as the Smoking Sea, sailors are still afraid to travel there after all of these centuries. The ruins of the ancient city of Valyria are both a wonder and a terror, and for the most part rot unplundered, as few men who actually venture there ever return.

The legacy of the Valyrians lives on in their colonies, which over the centuries turned into the independent Free Cities.

The first one hundred years after the Doom of Valyria were a mad free-for-all known as the "Bleeding Years" in which different colonies tried to unify or conquer all of the others to rebuild the Valyrian empire, while others tried to assert their independence.

Valyria's oldest and largest colony was Volantis, which is located on the border between the watershed of the River Rhoyne, and where the coast veers south to form the Valyrian peninsula.

Volantis succeeded in conquering Lys and Myr and was also attempting to absorb Tyrosh. The last true scion of the Valyrian empire was located on distant Dragonstone island, off the coast of Westeros, where House Targaryen a family of Valyrian nobles possessed the only dragons to survive the Doom.

Volantis begged the Targaryens to assist them in rebuilding the Valyrian empire, but they refused, instead choosing to prepare to go west to conquer and forge a new realm in Westeros.

Tyrosh was joined by Pentos, as well as rebellions in Lys and Myr, and material support from Braavos. Even the Stormlands of Westeros, under the independent Storm Kings, sent aid.

Lys and Myr were liberated and Volantis' power was checked. However, the alliance soon fell apart and Lys and Myr have remained intractable enemies ever since.

Volantis remains one of the more powerful of the Free Cities, but for the past three hundred years has focused on trade, while Braavos rose to become the most powerful overall.

A map showing the location of Meereen, a major city in Slaver's Bay, on the continent of Essos. East of the Valyrian peninsula, as one follows the coast of the Summer Sea west-to-east, there is a large gulf known as the Gulf of Grief, which extends further north into a bay known as Slaver's Bay.

The people of the cities of Slaver's Bay, on its eastern coast, are descendants of Valyria's old rival Ghis. When the Valyrian empire was first expanding, Ghis was the only major power that stood in its way, but after a series of wars the Ghiscari could not withstand the dragons of Valyria, and they were conquered.

Today, the three major cities of Slaver's Bay are from north to south Meereen , Yunkai , and Astapor. Their inhabitants are predominantly descendants of Ghis, just as the people of the Free Cities are mostly descended from Valyria, though over hundreds of years both groups have intermarried with local peoples.

The city of Old Ghis itself is in ruins. Slaver's Bay is south of the Dothraki Sea, from which is separated by a chain of mountains that run north-west to south-east, though there are passes in the mountains such as the Khyzai Pass.

The mountains also separate Slaver's Bay from the Red Waste further to the south-east. A major river, the Shahazadhan, flows through the mountains and to the sea, past Meereen in the north which is built along its banks.

The river extends through the mountains and into the interior, thrugh the Khyzai Pass into Lhazar. The area was formerly known as Slaver's Bay, which was a major hub for the international slave trade, and often raided the continent of Sothoryos which is located nearby, south across the Summer Sea.

Daenerys Targaryen recently launched a military campaign in the region, taking Astapor and Yunkai, then capturing Meereen and setting herself up as the city's queen.

Daenerys was determined to end slavery and abolished it in Meereen; however, as soon as her army left, Astapor and Yunkai fell out of her control, and eventually were reconquered by the slavers.

When the slavers attempted to invade Meereen to overthrow Daenerys, they were quickly defeated by Daenerys, her dragons, her unsullied, and her Dothraki.

As Daenerys left the city to return to Westeros, she changed the name of the region from Slaver's Bay to the "Bay of Dragons", to reflect that slavery had come to an end once and for all.

A map showing the approximate borders of the Dothraki sea on the continent of Essos. The plains of the " Dothraki Sea " are the vast grasslands of the interior of Essos, a "sea of grass" which stretches for miles upon miles.

It is inhabited by a fierce race of nomadic horse-mounted warriors known as the Dothraki. The one permanent settlement of the Dothraki is their "city" of Vaes Dothrak , located in the shadow of an isolated mountain known as the Mother of Mountains.

The Dothraki Sea is vast, and borders many other regions of Essos. It is east of the Free Cities, beginning east of the Forest of Qohor in the north, and in the south, it is north-east of the swamps that are between Volantis and the Valyrian peninsula.

Slaver's Bay is directly south of much of the Dothraki Sea.

On the western shore of Essos, the furthest point north at Braavos is at the same latitude as the Vale of Arryn , and the furthest point south near Tyrosh is at the same latitude as Dorne , separated only by the island chain known as the Stepstones.

Pentos, located roughly between these two extremes, is at the same latitude as King's Landing. A map showing the location of the nine Free Cities on the continent of Essos.

The Nine Free Cities are former colonies of the Valyrian Freehold before its fall except for Braavos, which was founded by refugees fleeing slavery in Valyria.

The Free Cities are the westernmost part of Essos, and thus the closest part of the continent to Westeros - located on the other side of the Narrow Sea.

Each is now an independent city-state, competing amongst themselves for land and resources and forming various shifting alliances. They are located on the westernmost portion of Essos, separated from Westeros by the Narrow Sea , and are in frequent contact with the Seven Kingdoms, conducting brisk trade with them.

In general, the western region of Essos containing the Free Cities is dominated by rugged hills in the north, which give way to rolling plains as one proceeds further south.

Chief among these are the Hills of Norvos located in the center-north of the western region. The only major forest in this region is the vast Forest of Qohor, located east of the Hills of Norvos and bordering the plains of the Dothraki Sea.

The western region is dominated by the watershed of the Rhoyne River , and its many tributaries, which begin in these hills and flow more or less from the north-west to the south-east, where the Rhoyne's massive river delta empties into the Summer Sea near the port of Volantis.

The river-based merchant -states of the Rhoynar people used to thrive along its waters, but a thousand years ago the Rhoynar were defeated by the expanding Valyrians, and the survivors fled to Dorne in Westeros.

The ruins of some of their cities can still be seen along the Rhoyne's shores. The Rhoyne River stretches all the way to its origin in the north-west, not far from Braavos, where the Upper Rhoyne and Little Rhoyne converge near the ruins of Ghoyan Drohe.

Further south-east it is joined by the River Qhoyne, flowing from the Forest of Qohor, and their confluence results in a body of water known as Dagger Lake, at latitude between Pentos and Myr.

Thus, even the inland Free Cities of Norvos and Qohor and capable of maritime travel and trade, shipping their goods down the river system.

The Rhoyne River then drains out of Dagger Lake and as it proceeds south is fed by several other tributaries such as the Lhorulu coming from the west in the Golden Fields and then the Selhoru and Volaena both coming from the east.

The result of the convergence of these last tributaries into the already swollen lower Rhoyne is that the area east of the southern third or so of the Rhoyne is covered in disease-ridden and generally impassable marshes and swamps.

In contrast, the western side of the Rhoyne delta, located between Lys and Volantis, is much more dry and pleasant, a region known as the Orange Shores.

As one proceeds north-to-south along the western coast of Essos, from Braavos to Tyrosh, the continent can be divided into roughly three regions west of the Rhoyne River: the Hills of Andalos , then the Flatlands , and furthest to the south the " Disputed Lands " between Myr and Lys.

The Hills of Andalos, mostly separated from the Hills of Norvos by the Upper Rhoyne and Lorath Bay, is where the people known as the Andals originated before they left to conquer Westeros thousands of years ago.

Extending north from this region, in the north-west corner of the continent, is the Braavos Peninsula.

Today, the peninsula and Andalos are more or less controlled by Braavos, leaving to it often being called the Braavosian Coastland.

This division happens at roughly the same latitude of nearby Pentos. As their name suggests they are a region of flat farmlands.

The northern extreme of the Flatlands starts east of Pentos, is bounded on the east by the course of the Rhoyne River, and has a southern extreme more or less around the latitude of Myr, and that city's bay known as the Sea of Myrth.

South of the Flatlands and the Sea of Myrth are a less well-defined region known as the "Disputed Lands".

They are so-called because different portions of them are constantly changing hands between the Free Cities of Lys and Myr, which have been bitter rivals for centuries.

Tyrosh, which is located at the western extreme of the peninsula formed by the Disputed Lands, and Volantis to the east, also often get dragged into these internecine conflicts between the two archenemies.

Tyroshi itself is the closest of the Free Cities to Westeros, separated from them by a chain of islands known as the Stepstones which according to legend once formed a land bridge to Westeros known as the Arm of Dorne, before it was broken.

Volantis succeeded in conquering Lys and Myr and was also attempting to absorb Tyrosh. These mountains are the sources for several rivers which come together to form the immense Rhoyne , which flows south for hundreds of miles before emptying into the Summer Sea at Volantis.

Living in large clans known as khalasars , the Dothraki are a feared race of horse-riding warriors who frequently raid surrounding lands.

The Dothraki Sea extends for over two and a half thousand miles into the east, before ending at the immense chain known as the Bone Mountains.

South-east of the Free Cities lies the peninsula of Valyria. Formerly a warm and pleasant land, this region was shattered in a titanic volcanic cataclysm known as the Doom of Valyria some four centuries ago.

The city of Valyria itself now lies on an offshore island, separated from the mainland by the forbidding Smoking Sea.

Volcanic activity has continued unabated in Valyria for the past four centuries, preventing any attempt at resettlement. Only in the north of this region do permanent cities exist, most notably at ill-omened Mantarys and the coastal cities of Elyria and Tolos.

To the east of the Valyrian Peninsula lies Slaver's Bay , with the great slave-cities of Meereen , Yunkai and Astapor clinging to its eastern shores.

These rich and powerful cities serve as the center of the world's slave trade. The Dothraki often sell their captives there, if they require gold for some enterprise.

South of Slaver's Bay lies the nation of Ghiscar , which claims to have inherited the mantle of the ancient Ghiscari Empire. So far the Ghiscari have claimed a few small settlements along the coast of the Gulf of Grief and the offshore island of Ghaen.

The Lhazareen are a notably unwarlike people, preferring a peaceful life raising sheep. The Dothraki call them the Lamb-Men and frequently raid them to steal cattle and take slaves.

East of Lhazar lies the Red Waste , a harsh desert dotted with ruined cities and few sources of water. South-east of the waste lies the great city of Qarth , which sits on the Straits of Qarth or Jade Gates.

North of the Dothraki Sea lies the large island of Ib , or Ibben. The Ibbenese are noted sailors whose ships can be found in many ports of the world.

They mostly survive by whaling. The Ibbenese also have small colonies on the north coast of Essos. East of Ibben, the Bone Mountains and Qarth, hard facts give way to lands of rumour and song.

Along the northern coast, beyond Ibben, lies a vast archipelago known as the Thousand Islands. Nestled in the eastern foothills of the Bone Mountains lie the fabled cities of Kayakayanaya , Samyriana and Bayasabhad.

Beyond them still lies the vast chasm known as the Great Sand Sea and the Shrinking Sea , once a great inland sea that is now a collection of small lakes.

North of them lies the Plains of the Jogos Nhai , whilst to their east lies the forested lands of Mussovy. What lies to the east of Mussovy is not known, even to legend.

Yi Ti stretches along the northern coast of the Jade Sea, consisting of great cities and hot jungles. It is the center of wealth on the Jade Sea, with ships sailing from across the known world to trade there.

South of them lies a forbidding area of mountains and hills shrouded in darkness, known as the Shadow Lands or Shadow.

This area extends southwards along a mountainous peninsula, at the very tip of which is the port city of Asshai. Asshai sits at the point where the Jade Sea meets the Saffron Straits.

What lies beyond Asshai and the Straits to the east is not known, whilst the little-known continent of Ulthos lies south of the Straits.

Like Westeros, Essos is prone to the lengthy and unpredictable seasons of the world. However, as it lies further south than northern Westeros, these seasonal variations tend to be much milder.

That said, the winters are still cold enough to cause the canals of Braavos to freeze over. In terms of climate, Essos tends to be warmer than northern Westeros, due to its more southerly location.

Essos's greater size gives rise to considerably larger mountain ranges than anything in Westeros, inland seas and, most notably, large plains such as the lands of the Jogos Nhai and the Dothraki Sea, as well as deserts such as the Red Waste.

The western-most region is known as the Free Cities , for it is dominated by nine great city-states and the large regions of territory each control.

This is the area that has the most traffic with Westeros, lying as it does just a few days sail across the Narrow Sea.

East of the Free Cities lies the vast region known as the Dothraki Sea , consisting mainly of the vast grasslands that give it its names, as well as the lands watered by the River Sarne.

Immediately neighbouring them to the east is the kingdom of Lhazar. The gateway between east and west, this region sees immense wealth flowing between the Summer Sea in the west and the Jade Sea in the east.

North of the Dothraki Sea lies the island of Ib sometimes called Ibben , which also controls stretches of the nearby mainland as well.

East of the Dothraki Sea lies the immense Bone Mountains and the Plains of the Jogos Nhai , home to a formidable, nomadic warrior-race as well as the surviving city-states of the ancient, long-fallen Patrimony of Hyrkoon.

The wealthy island of Leng lies just off its coast. In the far south-east of the world lies the Jade Sea , a vast, circular ocean whose shores teem with great cities, forbidding jungles and dark mysteries.

Hundreds of islands fill the Jade Sea, chief among them fire-shrouded Marahai and the exotic Island of Elephants.

The Mountains of the Morn loom over the landscape, in a hidden valley of which is said to lie the Hidden Sea, the homes of the fabled winged men and the forbidding, mysterious city of Carcosa.

Knowledge fails us in this land and reality and myth become entwined. Finally, south of the Mountains of the Morn and east of the Jade Sea lies the Shadow Lands , a land of towering mountains so high that they block out the sun, plunging the surrounding valleys into utter darkness even during the day.

This is the land of ghost grass, the brackish waters of the River Ash and the corpse-city Stygai, where even the greatest sorcerers of the Shadow refuse to tread.

At the mouth of the Ash lies the largest city but most heavily under-populated in the known world, Asshai-by-the-Shadow, mostly left in derelict ruins where sorcerers practice foul rites and hungry merchants lust for gold.

The population of Essos is hard to estimate, although maesters suggest it is considerably more than the conservative estimates of forty-five million for Westeros.

Yi Ti is densely populated and the Free Cities almost all dwarf the largest cities in Westeros in population. Due to its huge size, Yi Ti is home to numerous disparate factions and forces.

The Free Companies , or mercenary sellswords, are considerably influential. Many of the city-states cannot afford to maintain standing armies, so they instead hire swords for coin to fight their battles for them.

Although traditional, this has been cited as ineffective, since sellswords are untrustworthy and may turn their cloak if another city offers a better price.

The Unsullied of Astapor, famed warrior-eunuchs with a reputation for absolute loyalty and fearlessness, are popular for their staunch reliability in battle, but this comes with a price.
